Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small kid. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay developed a social conscious from her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her youth, however she was able to spend summers with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. When she was in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash in the house that belonged to a member of jury. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful. Autumn Riley is an American actress who is famous for American Experience (1997) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn has appeared as Rose on the screen in A More Perfect Union (2009) as well as Anna Payne, in American Experience (1987).
